          Pets

Please note that, in public places or places that are open to the public, domestic animals, particularly dogs, must be muzzled and kept on a leash or kept in an appropriate pet carrier. It is also recommended to check the authorized methods for transporting pets with your travel agent or airline. Passengers travelling with pets must have appropriate materials with them that they can use to clean up after their pet whenever necessary.

          Rules for transport

          • Small pets
Dogs and cats can travel in the cabin with their owners, in a suitable pet carrier, no larger than 46x25x31 cm, with a waterproof and absorbent base. The total weight, including the carrier, must not exceed 8 or 10 kg, depending on the airline. Reservations are required.
          • Large pets
Large pets must be carried in the hold (which is pressurized, heated and lit), in a suitable pet carrier (the animal must be able to stand up and turn around). Reservations must be made in advance.
          • Guide Dogs

The dog's owner must also provide the necessary equipment for the trip (muzzle, leash and/or carrier).

          Health documents

          • For pets arriving from both EU and non-EU countries
Dogs and cats arriving in Italy must be accompanied by a certificate of origin and health and/or an identification document indicating its rabies and distemper vaccination dates, including yearly boosters. If the animal is less than three months old, it must not show any signs of infectious disease, must have been in captivity since birth and must not come from a company that is subject to restrictive measures.
          • For pets arriving from EU countries or accompanied by a passenger
          • The animal's documentation just needs to be shown to the customs official in the Arrivals Area.
          • For pets arriving from non-EU countries or not accompanied by a passenger
The Veterinary Official of the BIP (the airport's Border Inspection Post) will be required to check the animal and issue a certificate allowing the animal to enter the country. Small animals and pets travelling with their owners do not need to be checked by the BIP veterinary official as long as there are no more that five of them in arrival and they do not belong to the psittacidae (parrots) or leporidae (rabbits) families.
          • Pets travelling to EU countries
The applicable rules are the same as those for pets arriving from EU countries (with the exception of the United Kingdom, for which certain restrictions apply).
          • Pets travelling to non-EU countries
The procedures vary depending on the destination country. For more detailed information, contact your Airline or Travel Agent. The necessary documents will be issued by the Veterinary Service of your Local Health Office (ASL).
          • Pets travelling within Italy
Special attention must be paid to the transport of dogs:
            to Sardinia: a specific document is required (issued by the Local Health Office - ASL) certifying that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days and no more than 12 months prior;
to Sicily: the animal must be accompanied by a health certificate showing that it has been vaccinated.
