Airport of Verona: after a positive November, traffic growth in December reached nearly 11%

Airport of Verona: after a positive November, traffic growth in December reached nearly 11% compared to the same month in 2009, with an increase that is slightly higher than the 9% expected by the managing company. Double digits growth figures hadn’t been registered in Verona since the beginning of the economic crisis.

Verona, 10th January 2011 – A total of 177.277 passengers travelled to or from Verona Airport last December, registering a 12,80% increase in scheduled flights (referring to both traditional and low cost flights). Charter flights figures fell by 2,61%, with a smaller contraction than in previous months. Overall December traffic increased by 10,97%.

Confirming former projections, Catullo airport closed the year 2010 with a traffic value that is nearly the same as for 2009, with 3.012.908 passengers carried. This positive trend is expected to consolidate in the future months, even if contrasting signals are coming from the market.

In Europe in fact, air-transportation is slowly recovering from the 2008 recession, but traffic growth registered in November in European countries was lower than October figures. Experts are not considering this data as necessarily negative ones, but interpret them as the consequence of a an adjustment period that will level off the monthly growth around 5-6%. Analysts have explained as well that traffic figures of the last two months of 2010 were also prejudiced by difficult weather conditions. The negative weather situation has influenced flying operations from other European airports (Paris, London, Brussels) to Verona and many flights were cancelled last December.

Considering December figures, the best performances were registered by the following European airports: London (with 5.120 passengers more compared to 2009, 60% of which from low cost flights), Paris (traffic increasing thanks to 3.457 passengers more in comparison with 2009, 80% low cost), Munich (with 7.769 passengers carried), Frankfurt (with 8.203 passengers, confirms to be the European most requested hub). Madrid, new low cost destination available from Verona starting from last November, registered 3.633 passengers last December. A significant number of foreign incoming travelers has been registered also on tourist routes, not only on business ones, such as from UK, France, Spain and Russia. On the single day of January 2nd 2011 a total of 4.583 Russian passengers arrived to Airport Catullo, thanks to 46 charter flights. Business activities at the airport have been diversified and include scheduled, low cost and charter flights.

Among the most chosen extra-European routes during the Christmas holidays, as already registered in the first three weeks of December, are sea destinations like Sharm El Sheik (5.955 passengers in December), Marsa Alam (3.354 passengers in December) and Casablanca (1.866 passengers in December). Good results also for long-haul connections that Blue Panorama has started from 23rd December to La Romana (Santo Domingo), Cancun (Mexico) and L’Havana (Cuba).

Yesterday 9th January, last day of the Christmas season, we registered an extraordinary traffic boom with 185 flights (departures and arrivals). Catullo airport, in cooperation with the Authorities operating in the terminal, has managed this unusual passengers flow with the highest commitment, in spite of the fog, which in the late morning and early afternoon has slown down some operations. Because of the fog only four flights were rerouted to other airports during the day and in the evening two additional flights rerouted from Forlì because of bad weather have been accepted to land in Verona.

Excellent performances from the travel retail segment too. Business activities, such as for instance Golden Point and Nau Ottica, have also benefit from the passengers traffic registered.

In view of the year figures, most important connections in Italy remain Rome (with 336.117 passengers carried is the route giving by far the highest traffic volume) and Catania, while Frankfurt and Munich are the most requested international destinations.
