Verona, 23 December 2011 – The Verona Airport reacts to the crisis by becoming involved in new market segments such as cruises, and by strengthening the mid and long range lines which are having the best success. The traffic data in the first 19 days of December shows this, taking Catullo to 3,3000,000 passengers transported since January.

The crisis influences the services, implying an increase in travel and transportation spending for Italians (+13.1% of payments with credit card for travel and transportation at November) and spending for foreigners in Italy (+ 4-5% compared to 2010). The tourism market evolves toward new methods of use and products. There is a tendency to travel on 25 December or on other holidays in order to take advantage of more advantageous prices.

"We are experiencing a very delicate moment which can translate into a great opportunity for relaunching – said Chairman Paolo Arena – The company business engine is working to reap the full benefits offered by the offers stemming from the market evolution. We are working to sustain the flows arriving in the territory which have significant impact in terms of stimulation, considering that foreign traveller spending will increase, exceeding €30 billion in Italy this year. We have identified and opened new lines and market segments such as cruises, much appreciated by our users, banking on the fact that the average spending of Italian travellers rose in the last two years from €449 to €473 per capita".

"At the same time, together with our Partners, we are taking on the issue of new governance which is an indispensable condition of development – Chairman Arena continued – having concluded the third phase of the capital increase operation with the end of this year and establishing the first streamlining actions, in January the Partners will meet again and we expect definitive indications from them regarding the Industrial Plan in order to move on to the implementation phase of their indications in the first months of 2012".

The forecast for traffic in the holiday period is good. Great Britain, Germany and Russia remain markets which generate significant incoming tourism flows to the territory. The large European cities and cruises are reconfirmed as the products most in demand by the users in the basin. For cruise lovers a dedicated offer was structured with the opening of flights for Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Red Sea operated by Neos in partnership with two of the most important operators in the sector, Costa Crociere and MSC Crociere. In global connection rankings London remains one of the most attractive destinations, as well as Vienna, Madrid, Paris and Berlin. Winter seaside destinations continue to be some of the most preferred by Italians for Christmas holidays. This year from Verona flights are available to the Caribbean (Cancun, Cuba, Dominican Republic), the Indian Ocean (Zanzibar and Mauritius), Kenya and Cape Verde, which are providing excellent results, with some flights already full with the holidays at hand. Sicily and Rome, which can be reached with flights operated by the Meridiana fly - Air Italy Group, Wind Jet, Alitalia and Ryanair, are reconfirmed as the main lines for domestic traffic. Air Dolomiti/Lufthansa, with three daily flights for Munich and three daily flights for Frankfurt, is the leader for connections with Germany, besides Air Berlin which connects Verona to Berlin and Düsseldorf.

The traffic forecast for the next Christmas holidays at the moment are in line with the enjoyment index recorded last year by Catullo passengers. The top ranking short range destinations last year from 24 December to 10 January were Catania, with 15,531 passengers transported, Palermo, which recorded 11,303 passengers and Rome, which took third place in Italian destinations with 10,409 passengers. As usual we had great success during long weekends in international capitals such as Moscow, which took the lead with 6,481 passengers, closely followed by London with 6,140 passengers and Frankfurt with 5,487 passengers transported.
