SATEFY TEST AT THE AIRPORT
During the night between 27th and 28th of November at airport Catullo Villafranca took place an emergency simulation exercise called “Sirmione 2009”. The alarm had the goal to test the general emergency plan and the coordination operations in case of an air disaster.
The exercise simulated an authentic crash involving around 150 people: airport operators, aircrew, figurants (travellers and waiting relatives), observers and coordinators.
The emergency signal was given around midnight, when the aircraft Boeing B737-300 which was made available by Air Italy airline, simulated to go off the runway. The plane was promptly reached by the fire rescue service and all passengers on board – walkers-on that were gently made available by Croce Rossa Italiana – were selected according to their wealth conditions (simulated with stage makeup) and carried to an Advance Medical Station (PMA) that was set up on purpose near the accident place. In the meantime the emergency medical service Verona Emergenza 118 sent various ambulances from the Province of Verona.
Operations were coordinated by firemen, Sanitary Direction and Police. An Emergency Operation Centre (critical room) was arranged at the terminal, along with a point of reunion for relatives and a gathering area for survivors.
The emergency operations – which were closed around 2 a.m. – were also assisted by the representatives of the airport managing company, Avio Handling staff, ENAC, Airforce, Border Police, Guardia di finanza, State Forestry Department, Fire Service, Croce Rossa Italiana and the Emergency Medical Service (SUEM) Verona 118 that supervised the sanitary assistance.
This exercise – provided for national and international laws – is the culminating moment of the periodical simulations carried out by the airport managing company and the authorities in charge on a monthly basis. A similar exercise also took place at airport Gabriele D’Annunzio in Brescia on Monday 30th November 2009.
The airport managing company would like to thank all authorities taking part to the operations for their kind helpfulness.
