VERONA AIRPORT: ALMOST 2 MILLION PASSENGERS CARRIED BETWEEN JANUARY AND JULY
439,710 passengers in July, up 13.8% on 2010
Verona, 11 August 2011 – Verona Airport was chosen by 1,943,605 passengers between January and July this year, thus confirming the double-figure growth forecast for the first half of the year (+12.8%), higher than the 8.9% average national increase for the same period1. In the first seven months of the year, passengers on domestic flights totalled 760,945, while the figure for international flights reached 1,168,188, to which must be added the 14,472 transit passengers. As has already been the case in the past, the rise in passengers, brought about by the opening of new routes from the area's main source markets, has also had a positive impact on tourist flows registered in the province of Verona.
The addition of more connections to Germany has led to a 10% rise in German visitors to the province. There has been an increase of 31%2 in German passengers through Catullo Airport, thanks to the new direct flights to Berlin and Düsseldorf operated by Air Berlin, as well as the existing connections for the Munich and Frankfurt hubs, and the seasonal flight for Cologne operated by Germanwings.
The opening of new low-cost routes and the rise in the frequency of flights towards London (into which British Airways, Ryanair and Easyjet currently fly) led to an 84% rise in arrivals in Verona from the English capital during the first half of the year. In the province of Verona there was a 5.8%3 rise in arrivals of tourists from England in the same period. Similar results have been observed for markets such as France, with an 8.7%4 rise in French arrivals in the province, partly thanks to the Air France and Ryanair flights to Paris; Belgium, with an increase of 25.5%5 (Ryanair flies from Verona to Brussels), and Spain, +31.1%6 (Ryanair flies from Verona to Madrid and Vueling operates a Verona-Barcelona flight).
The Airport is committed to implementing synergies with the surrounding area, with the aim of boosting tourist arrivals from both Italy and abroad. Through joint promotional activities, ranging from collaboration with Veronafiere to the partnership with the Arena Foundation, as well as the events organised for the press and for operators together with the Trentino area, sponsorship agreements and events for the public, the aim is to promote what the Verona area has to offer in conjunction with the flights that operate out of the city's airport. The next sponsored event on the calendar is "La Grande Notte delle Stelle" on 13 August, featuring music and entertainment in 25 municipalities of the Lake Garda area.
