AIRPORT OF VERONA. TRAFFIC INCREASING OVER THE PAST FIVE MONTHS.

AIRPORT OF VERONA. TRAFFIC INCREASING OVER THE PAST FIVE MONTHS. FIRST QUARTER OF 2011 REGISTERED 15,4% MORE PASSENGERS, DOUBLE INCREASE COMPARED TO NATIONAL AVERAGE VALUE

Traffic increase has already given positive results on the income statement. Positive gross profit margin (Ebidta) for the group.

Verona, 5th April 2011 – Today, on the occasion of the new Low Cost Area T2 opening, President Fabio Bortolazzi presented the positive performances of the Verona Airport, reaching a traffic increase by 15,4% in the first three months of the year.

Traffic figures over the first quarter of 2011 are particularly interesting, compared to the same results registered in the last ten years: highest value in 2000 (+16,6%) and lowest value in 2002 (–15%). In between the tragic events of September 11th 2001 making air traffic collapse. Ten years later the terminal is then recovering traffic figures registered earlier.

The effects on the income statement have determined a positive consolidated result for the months of January and February (months for which is the result is available already). Good correspondence between traffic increase and gross profit margin.

“Considering the 15,4% increase in the first months of the year, despite the crisis in North Africa and nearly a hundred flights to Egypt and Tunisia cancelled in January and February – commented President Fabio Bortolazzi – we believe we can look at the summer season with optimism. We should also consider that a further input will be given by the opening of five new routes over the next three months, besides with the re-opening of more than twenty seasonal routes. Summer traffic will also be positively influenced by eight routes that Ryanair has been operating since last November and that were not yet in operation last summer.”

President Fabio Bortolazzi explained the results of the traffic growth on tourism in the surrounding area of Catullo airport. “A significant increase in the number of incoming tourists was registered in December and January in our territory – stated President Bortolazzi – In 2011 an increase by 14,61% of travelers landing at the Catullo, also thanks to more low-cost and charter flights available, has enhanced new tourist flows from new markets, such as Spain. If we consider passenger figures for each country of origin, we can see a correspondence between growing traffic and opening or enhancement of some routes, as revealed by the Province of Verona for December and January and by the Province of Trentino for December”.

Remarkable is for instance an increase by 17,75% of tourists arriving in the Verona territory last January, compared to the same period in 2010, which is in line with an arrivals increase by 22,90% at Catullo in the same period. The same proportion was registered even last December: incoming flyers +14,79% and tourists at Verona +2,9%.

“We have always believed in the our synergic cooperation with Verona airport – commented Erminia Perbellini, Municipal Councillor for Culture and Tourism for Verona – The results we are gaining are positive and are giving evidence of a good teamwork. The economic advantage can be important, as stated by Ambrosetti in a research on the airports of northern Italy: each additional passenger may generate an overall impact of 400 Euros for our territory, if we are able to intercept and “hold” efficiently incoming travelers. It is an opportunity that we shouldn’t loose.”

Ruggero Pozzani, the Municipal Councillor for Culture in Verona, after expressing his contentment about the positive traffic figures, also reminded that over 2 million visitors arrived in our area in 2010. “The number of tourists jumped by nearly 100 thousand more last year, also thanks to exhibitions and other special events. I believe that improving flights connections over the coming months could be very important for two reasons. On one hand increasing the number of flights from traditional countries, such as Germany and UK, will allow us to penetrate those markets even better. On the other hand opening other flights to new destinations will offer new markets to explore and will attract new tourist flows. Furthermore, if flights will be confirmed for the winter, they might facilitate the deseanalization process and better distribute touristic flows over all months of the year”.
