Inaugurated the first building works for
lager boarding gates and security check-points
Airport Valerio Catullo of Verona presented this morning the new departure area. This is just the first part of the whole reconfiguration plan of the terminal, which was developed considering the gradual and continuous airport progress: the number of passengers doubled over ten years, reaching over three and a half million figures.
During the morning the new departure terminal welcomed a delegation of German Parliament members, who came on a visit to various airports in the north of Italy. The group of nine politicians was greeted by president Fabio Bortolazzi and general director, Claudio Boccardo, who explained Catullo development plan and the features of Verona and Brescia airport as parts of the Garda Airports System. The meeting, organized by Air Dolomiti, was a further occasion to make our trade relationship with Germany even deeper.
The new section, which will open tomorrow morning to the public, offers three times lager departure areas, including more security check-points and departure gates, together with additional commercial facilities.
“This operation – stated Fabio Bortolazzi, president of Catullo – is the first step of a series of actions that will allow to modify passenger facilities in our airport. Our aim is to develop soon an environmental marketing project that will make passengers feel in holiday right from their very first step inside the terminal. All this – added the president – is extremely important if we consider that we were recently awarded with a forty-years licence from the Italian government. This permission will change the future of the Sistema Aeroportuale del Garda, as the two Garda Airports will be re-launched thanks to an overall investment plan of almost two hundred million Euros”.
We are expecting – declared general director, Claudio Boccardo – an increasing number of travellers leaving from and landing to the Catullo airport. Our commitment is to offer our customers a higher quality service with an air terminal that, at the end of the rebuilding works, will have a capacity of over four and a half million passengers”.
Figures are positive: during the first four months of 2008 we registered a passengers increase of around 6 per cent, thus letting us expect an excellent trend for the summer season. During pick traffic months all building works (in the remaining terminal area) will be suspended to avoid operative difficulties; construction sites will open again next autumn to complete the works.
Tomorrow will open the first part of the departure area: 4.000 square meter completely rebuilt area, including 3.000 square metres of boarding gates, almost 600 square meters of commercial facilities, a hundred meters of first aid and another hundred for toilet rooms with nursery. “Thanks to this restructuring operations – underlined the director of Technical Operative Area, Antonio Zerman - the boarding area surface will be increased from 1.300 to 3.000 square meters, security check-points will be nine instead of six and boarding gates thirteen instead of ten, while passengers control points will pass from three to six, so that boarding operations will be smoother and easier. The terminal weight-bearing structures were also completely revised in compliance with the new earthquake regulations”.
Furthermore, eight additional check-in desks will be completed in record time by the middle of June in the area left free by the gates opening, and will be very useful during summer pick months.
When the terminal reconfiguration will be completed (next year according to the rebuilding plan, as works started last autumn) Catullo passengers will count on 50 check-in desks (instead of the previous 30 desks), including ten self check-in desks for faster departure operations; on ten security check points (instead of only six points as before), on 13 boarding gates and on a commercial area increased of almost 70%.
