VERONA AIRPORT: 3,200,000 PASSENGERS TRANSPORTED SINCE THE START OF THE YEAR. A POSITIVE START TO THE WINTER SEASON, WITH TRAFFIC WHICH IN NOVEMBER GREW BY 8.9% COMPARED TO THE SAME MONTH IN 2010
Verona, 7 December 2011 – In November, Verona Airport recorded an increase in passenger traffic by 8.9% compared to 2010 and 13.3% compared to 2009. The date of the increase is significant if we consider the low number of holidays which usually take place at this time of the year.
In the first eleven months of the year, 3,194,460 passengers were transported, of which 1,955,010 were international, 234,641 more than last year. This has had a positive impact on the area's production activity in the sector. On 4 December, traffic reached 3,215,184 passengers.
The two figure growth in international transport is continuing, and reached +13.6% in the period from January-November, despite a decrease in charter traffic, a segment which is currently responsible for 22.3% of the airport's traffic, a fall of 17.2% compared to 2010 due to the fragile political situation in North Africa.
Verona Airport is the 5th largest of Italy's 15 airports which process from 1 to 5 million passengers, with an 8.8% share of the segment's traffic. Verona's growth during the first ten months of the year (+12%) is greater than that of similarly sized airports in terms of the number of passengers transported, and is currently around 9.2%.
One new service for the winter season, launched on 31 October and designed especially for cruise fans, is opening of flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Red Sea, provided by Neos, in partnership with two of the sector's largest operators, Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises. The reinforcement of long haul flights, with an increase in departures for the Caribbean (Cancun, Cuba, Dominican Republic), the Indian Ocean (Zanzibar and Mauritius), Kenya and Cape Verde, is bringing excellent results, with some flights already fully booked in the run up to the Christmas festivities.
Next weekend, which coincides with Italy's Immacolata public holiday on 8 December, 274 flights in 4 days are scheduled, set to transport more than 20,000 passengers. Last year, 17,938 passengers were transported on the same days.
